Body of Indian medical student killed in RussiaUkraineWar arrives in Bengaluru


The mortal remains of Indian medical student who was killed by Russian shelling Ukraine, have arrived in Bengaluru on March 21. 

Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagaudar was a Final Year Medical student at Kharkiv National Medical University who died on March 1 while waiting for groceries, was a resident of Karnataka’s Haveri district.

Naveen’s family member besides the Karnataka Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai were present at the Bengaluru airport to receive the body at midnight. Those present, paid their last respects to the deceased while the Chief Minister laid a wreath on the mortal remains.

CM Bommai thanked the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, for facilitating the process of bringing the student’s mortal remains from a war-torn Ukraine. He wrote:

“I thank the Central Government for making efforts on bringing back the mortal remains of Naveen Shekharappa Gyangoudar, who was killed in a shelling attack in Ukraine. It’s unfortunate that we lost him in the shelling,” 

Dr Sudhakar K, Karnataka’s Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Medical Education, who was also present at the Kempegowda International Airport, has also extended his thanks to PM Modi and CM Bommai for their consistent efforts in bringing back the mortal remains of Naveen.

CM Bommai has handed over a cheque of ₹25 lakh to Naveen Shekharappa’s family besides promising a job for a family member.

Shankarappa, father of Naveen had said on Saturday that the family members have decided to donate their son’s body for medical research to a private hospital in Davangere, after paying their last respects.

Naveen’s father told ANI news agency:

“My son wanted to achieve something in the medical field, that didn’t happen. At least his body can be used by other medical students for studies. That’s why, we at home, have decided to donate his body for medical research.”
